We had such a successful and education trip to the Crested Butte Heritage Museum last week! Just to think, studying grove snails in Europe led us back to CB. How you ask?
Well, in science we started studying European grove snails to investigate why some organisms are more likely or less likely to survive in an environment. We clicked on a few photos of grove snails in their natural habitats and that landed us in a teeny little country called Slovenia.
Then, we wanted to learn more about this small European country. We learned about the history, culture, food and geography of Slovenia. We noticed some differences and some similarities to our home here in the mountains.
Next, we transitioned into a biography study and thought that heading to the CB Museum would be a great start as our town has been home to some pretty interesting characters, and still is!
We learned that one of the first families to settle here in Crested Butte, the Kochevars, was from...wait for it...Slovenia!
When Nel Burkett, the current curator of the museum shared that with us, the kids all lit up! "Slovenia!! We just studied Slovenia!!" It was a super cool moment.
So yes, for reading, writing and social studies, we are going right into our biography study! Students will be selecting someone to study this week. While the internet is an amazing resource, we're going to kick it old school and use a book as our main resource.
We will also be reading a lot of interesting stories about inspirational people together and using these mentor texts to discover the most important information needed in researching and writing biographies.
This week, we are honing our multiple digit addition and subtraction skills. Yep, it's all about borrowing and carrying this week. I have created a mini unit dedicated to digging deep with number sense as this is the foundation which all other mathematical concepts are built. Students will be working within groups in the classroom based off their current strengths and goals with computation and number sense.
We're picking back up with our study of grove snails! We'll be working with models to make sense of traits and survival, discussing scientific explanations and even writing our own explanations! Pretty sophisticated, huh?
We are putting the pause button on the Design Time on Fridays as we're still needing to gather materials! So, please send in any interesting recycling that we could use to build. Here's some ideas:
Your child brought a progress report home in an envelope on Friday. Please send the comment card and envelope back at your earliest convenience.
Thank you so much for all you do!
Have a great week!
